He victimized opposing pitchers for a .500 batting average on 12 hits in 24 at-bats, piling up 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 8 runs scored.
Thus far this season Varela is hitting .285 with 6 home runs, 33 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He has 43 hits in 151 at-bats and has played in 38 games. |

Monday, May 22nd, 2017: Today the American announced the Player of the Week Award. This week's honoree is Detroit left fielder Joel Blachford. When he steps into the batter's box, it's usually bad news for pitchers.
For the week he batted .462 (12-26) with 4 home runs and 12 RBIs.

Sunday, May 21st, 2017: José Martínez had to leave the Tigers game against Texas after suffering a fractured thumb while being hit by a pitch. He will be out of the lineup at least 6 weeks. He told reporters, "I just felt a sharp pain when it happened. I knew there was something wrong."
Looking at his season stats, Martínez has compiled a .271 batting average and a .341 on-base percentage, while hitting 8 home runs and driving in 35 runs. |
